Elephants, typically consuming up to 100 liters of water daily on average, are estimated to have drunk about 6,000 liters in one sitting. Lautenbach noted, “Instead of seeking water elsewhere, they indulged in a mud wallow before turning their attention to the lodge swimming pool. By the time I arrived, over 60 elephants were gathered around the lodge, drinking from the pool two or three at a time. They wallowed in the mud first, turning the water muddy brown before consuming more than half of the pool’s water.”

For more than three hours, the herd reveled in drinking, wallowing, and socializing around the lodge before eventually retreating back into the bush.
