Dragon’s Blood – The Most Mysterious Tree Species on the Planet

With its giant umbrella-like shape and red resin resembling blood, the Dragon’s Blood Tree is one of the most unique plant species on the planet.

The Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena draco) is a tropical species found on the Socotra archipelago in Yemen. This archipelago is located in the Indian Ocean, near the Gulf of Aden.

The growth pattern of the Dragon’s Blood Tree is quite unusual. When young, they have a single trunk.

After around 10 to 15 years, the trunk stops growing, and fragrant white flowers similar to lily blossoms appear.

After the flowers wither, red berries emerge.

Then, new shoots emerge, and the tree begins to branch out.

Each branch grows for about 10 to 15 years before producing secondary branches. These secondary branches, in turn, produce tertiary branches.

It takes about 10 years for the Dragon’s Blood Tree to reach a height of approximately 120 cm. However, they grow faster afterward.

The resin of the tree is red like blood, sour, and slightly aromatic, hence the name Dragon’s Blood.

Research suggests that the resin of the Dragon’s Blood Tree has the ability to nourish the body, enhance immunity, heal the skin, and treat wounds.

The tree’s bark is also used in the formulation of cosmetics.
