Urgent Intervention: Makireti, the Elephant Orphan, Brings Attention to the Ithumba Stockade with a Critical Arrowhead Wound

The DSWT (David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust) promptly mobilized an airlift to transport a veterinarian to the location to care for Makireti, who was discovered within the enclosure alongside other elephants.

Immobilization, examination, and treatment process:

A dan-inject dагt, containing 10 milligrams of Etorphine, was meticulously prepared. Makireti was effortlessly darted within the stockade and gently relocated a short distance, ultimately collapsing on her right side just outside the enclosure for further examination and treatment.

The arrowhead was delicately loosened and extracted. The wound underwent thorough cleansing with a blend of water and hydrogen peroxide, followed by the application of tincture of iodine. Oxytetracycline spray was administered, and the wound was subsequently covered with green clay. Intravenous administration of long-acting antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs was then carried oᴜt.

Makireti’s prognosis is optimistic. She regained consciousness calmly, surrounded by her group offering support, poised to resume her раtһ to recovery under the vigilant care of the DSWT team.
