The DSWT (David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust) quickly organized an airlift to transport a veterinarian to the location, ensuring prompt care for Makireti, who was found within the enclosure alongside other elephants.
The immobilization, examination, and treatment process began with the careful preparation of a dan-inject dагt, which contained 10 milligrams of Etorphine. Makireti was skillfully darted within the stockade and then gently moved a short distance. She eventually сoɩɩарѕed on her right side just outside the enclosure, allowing for further examination and treatment.
The arrowhead was carefully removed, and the wound underwent a meticulous cleaning process using a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Tincture of iodine was applied, and the wound was treated with Oxytetracycline spray before being covered with green clay. To aid in the healing process, long-acting antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs were administered intravenously.
Makireti’s prognosis looks promising. She calmly regained consciousness, surrounded by her group, and is now poised to resume her journey to recovery under the watchful care of the DSWT team.
