Cardi B finds herself amidst controversy after referring to her Met Gala designer as ‘Asian’ instead of mentioning his name, sparking substantial backlash across social media platforms.
During an interview with Emma Chamberlain, the Grammy winner hesitated when asked about her gown’s mastermind, stating, ‘They’re Asian and everything.’
Addressing the backlash on social media, Cardi defended her choice, explaining that she forgot how to pronounce designer Sensen Lii’s name, who is the founder of the label Windowsen.
In an Instagram video, the rapper elaborated on her state of mind, revealing she felt rushed and overwhelmed while being ushered to the front of the line at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Expressing concern about mispronouncing Lii’s name, Cardi opted for ‘Asian designer’ instead of specifying his nationality, fearing she might be offensive.
Responding to Vogue’s former managing director Gilbert Cheah’s critique, Cardi emphasized she didn’t intend to offend anyone and appreciated the hard work of the designer and her stylist for the Met Gala theme.
Cheah had expressed disappointment over Cardi’s oversight, stating that the gown, created by Chinese designer Sensen Lii, took two months to make but wasn’t on theme.
On social media, users condemned Cardi for not knowing the designer’s name, labeling her actions disrespectful and questioning her lack of acknowledgment for the months-long design process.
Despite the controversy, Cardi’s Met Gala appearance made a lasting impression, with her monumental tulle skirt requiring nine men to fan out the fabric as she ascended The Met’s famous steps.
