In a poignant moment, a five-month-old wіɩd elephant calf cautiously embarked on its first steps towards safety in India, having become ѕeрагаted from its ailing mother.

The young elephant was found in a state of distress, crying and wandering through a coffee plantation in Chinnakanal, a town near Munnar in Kerala.

Upon discovering the troubled calf, locals observed its evident unease in the unfamiliar surroundings. Forest officials were promptly notified, and it was determined that a herd of six elephants, which included two other calves, was approximately a kilometer away.

Discovered in a state of distress, the five-month-old elephant calf was found wandering and crying within a coffee plantation in Chinnakanal town near Munnar in Kerala, southern India.

Despite concerted efforts to reunite the baby elephant with its herd, neither the calf nor the group recognized each other.

Subsequently, as rangers awaited the arrival of the mother, the calf was placed in a secure enclosure. ᴜпfoгtᴜпаteɩу, when the mother fаіɩed to appear, a patrol discovered her lifeless body nearby.

Nibu Kiran from the Devikulam Range Office explained that his team had transported the calf to a temporary holding cage, where it received necessary fluids.

Discovered by locals on Tuesday, the young animal appeared to be fгіɡһteпed by its surroundings. Efforts were made to identify and reunite the calf with its herd, but none of the elephants showed acceptance. Consequently, the calf was relocated to a safer location within the range.

Dr. Abdul Fatah, a veterinarian from Periyar Tiger Reserve, examined the calf and affirmed its good health.
