In a remarkable event that defies the odds, a mother in Shanghai, China, has given birth to identical quadruplets, a one-in-15-million occurrence.
The four baby girls entered the world on July 7 in Shanghai, China, and after a period of observation, they were discharged from the hospital on September 22, as reported by the People’s Daily Online.
Delivered via cesarean section at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University at 31 weeks, the quadruplets weighed between 780g (27 ounces) and 1,120g (39 ounces) each. Following their birth, they were transferred to Fudan University’s children’s hospital for intensive care and evaluation by medical professionals.
Their 29-year-old mother, hailing from Jiangxi province, expressed concerns about the economic burden of raising six children, including her existing son and daughter. However, upon learning about her quadruplet pregnancy, she sought specialized care in Shanghai.
Despite initial challenges, including respiratory issues for the youngest of the quadruplets, the girls’ health has since improved. Grateful for the medical team’s care, their mother, Wu Weiqing, expressed heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging the pivotal role of doctors and nurses in her daughters’ well-being.
The extensive medical treatment incurred a total cost of 400,000 yuan (£46,000), with a significant portion subsidized by charitable funds, reflecting the community’s support for this extraordinary family.
The birth of identical quadruplets is not only a testament to medical advancements but also a heartwarming story of resilience, hope, and the power of community support in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
