In Des Moines, two dogs were discovered trapped in kennels within an abandoned apartment, deprived of food and water, left in dire conditions. The Animal Rescue League intervened, rescuing Amilia and Scrappy, both large-breed dogs, who were shockingly emaciated at just 22 pounds each. Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old in connection with their neglect.
Of the two dogs in critical need of immediate attention, Amilia’s state was particularly alarming. Severely weakened to the point of struggling to stand or walk, she suffered from extreme dehydration and showed signs of respiratory distress. Veterinarians determined that had Amilia not been rescued when she was, she would have succumbed within hours.
In the X-rays, it was evident that Amilia’s stomach and intestines were void of any contents, a stark indication of prolonged starvation and dehydration, as reported by the Rescue League.
Immediate intervention commenced with cautious administration of IV fluids. Remarkably, within just the initial day of treatment, Amilia managed to gain nine pounds, showcasing the dire need her body had for hydration and nourishment.
Presently, both Amilia and Scrappy are undergoing a structured refeeding regimen under close observation. However, their recovery journey is expected to be lengthy and demanding.
Raevon Teel faces two counts of aggravated animal neglect following this distressing incident.
