Napping by the tranquil waters of Kruger National Park, a drowsy boar’s tranquility is shattered as a vigilant leopard spots a golden chance for an effortless feast. Unseen and unheard, the leopard stealthily approaches its unsuspecting quarry. Tentatively, it tests the waters, unsure whether its target slumbers or has met its demise. A gentle prod with a paw jolts the boar from its slumber, prompting a desperate struggle to rise. Yet, the battle’s outcome is inevitable, sealed in moments. A fleeting skirmish ends with the leopard’s dominance, its vice-like jaws closing around the boar’s neck.
Amidst the untamed backdrop of Kruger National Park in South Africa, amateur photographer Lisl Moolman, 41, captures these riveting images through her binoculars. From Phalaborwa, South Africa, Moolman recounts, “Observant visitors hinted at the concealed leopard, concealed behind a mopani bush, on the dam’s distant side. Through my binoculars, I saw its unwavering focus in one direction.”
She continues, “With precision, the leopard advances towards the oblivious slumbering boar. In its blissful ignorance, the warthog’s grim fate awakens only with the leopard’s gentle caress of its forepaw—a rude arousal, indeed. Almost as if taken aback by the ease, the leopard orchestrates this takedown. The sequence, from paw to mortality, unfolds in roughly ten minutes. Though the warthog feebly resists sporadically, it stands no chance against this robust male leopard’s might.”
