On average, they can weigh up to 154 pounds, but measurements have occasionally reached 135 kilograms, or about the weight of a panda’s ear.
When hunting, Komodo dragons are infamous for their lethal and toxic attacks.
It was believed that these lizards secreted venomous proteins comparable to those of venomous snakes before the University of Queensland revealed that this was false. It was also believed that these lizards carried various strains of bacteria in their saliva that could harm prey animals.
Komodo dragons are only found on the five Indonesian islands; they are absent from the rest of the world. The main island bearing their name, Komodo Island, is home to the highest number of Komodo dragons worldwide.
Komodo dragons have survived for millions of years in the harsh climate of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia.
They are widespread across the islands but prefer tropical regions. These active Komodo dragons can run up to seven kilometers each day, but they often stay close to home and do not venture out of their established territories.
